American
Indian Children in Minnesota
(This
includes children who were identified as American Indian only, as well
as multi-racial children where one of the races selected was American
Indian.)
The 2000 Census recorded
32,029 American Indian children in Minnesota,
2.5% of all Minnesota children. (See
Figure 6) Forty-two percent lived in the seven counties in the metro
area, and the remainder live in greater
Minnesota, primarily in the northern part of the state. Counties in
greater Minnesota with the highest percentage of American Indian
children tend to include reservations. These counties inlclude
Mahnomen, Beltrami, Cass, Becker, Clearwater, Cook, Itasca, Aitkin,
Mille Lacs, and Carlton in northern Minnesota, and Redwood in
southwestern Minnesota.
